Hello, Golden Week! Hello, Sales!
Welcome to “Siliconera Speaks Up,” our newsletter for the site! Before we get into things, we’re grateful for you here at Siliconera. We’ve restarted our Siliconera+ ad-free subscription option. For $1.99 per month, you will see no ads and be automatically entered into our monthly survey, where you can say what you’d like to see us work on next month. We have a two-month trial period, so you can test it out and see if it’s for you! Speak Up Sesh
Golden Week in Japan started just two days ago, and it will run until May 11. With the weather warming up, why not cool down with some limited time sales? Even in countries without Golden Week, we’re seeing sales on platforms like Steam and the Nintendo store. Here is a list of some of my recommended deals for games that you can beat before Golden Week is up—be warned that some discounts will end before May 11, so if there are games you’re interested in, check out their price now. Please also note that these are Canadian prices.
Reynatis - Originally $79.99; now $55.99 on Steam and $44.99 on Switch
A flashy magic-based action RPG that follows two perspectives with opposing worldviews and philosophies. It features a story by Kazushige Nojima (who worked on games like Final Fantasy X) and music by Yoko Shimomura (who worked on games like the Kingdom Hearts series).Yomawari: Lost in the Dark - Originally $49.99; now $24.99
A survival horror game with a cutesy art style. Yomawari: Lost in the Dark is the third installment in the Yomawari series of games. You don’t have to play the previous ones to understand this, though. You’ll have to employ your wits, stealth, and a pinch of luck to get through the night and solve the mystery of the curse plaguing you.Voice of Cards Trilogy - Originally $82.78; now $33.09
The Voice of Cards series of RPGs plays like a tabletop adventure, complete with a dungeon master voice-over, where everything from the environment to your items are cards. Yoko Taro, the scenario writer of the Drakengard and NieR series, was the creative director and scenario writer for Voice of Cards, too. So if you’re into his particular brand of dark humor and despair, you’re in for a treat.Super Robot Wars Y - Originally $79.99; now $53.59
For fans of Gundam and other mecha franchises, or just people who really like playing SRPGs, Super Robot Wars Y is the newest installment in the Super Robot Wars crossover franchise. Series that appear in Y include Gundam Wing, Macross Delta, and Code Geass. Super Robot Wars 30 is also on sale at 50% off.
Fate/Samurai Remnant - Originally $51.99; now $36.39
Since we still have to wait for quite some time until the Fate/Extra remake, why not get some Fate out of your system by playing Samurai Remnant? The story felt surprisingly complete for a spin-off, the characters were charming, and the gameplay was pretty fun to master. If you’re a fan of historical fiction and fantasy, and you’ve never tried Fate before, this could be a good gateway into the series.NieR: Automata - Originally $53.50; now $21.40
NieR: Automata is one of those games where I think everyone should experience themselves and not through someone else playing it. It’s funny, philosophical, sad, and absolutely life-changing. It is technically part of the Drakengard and NieR timeline, but you don’t really need to play the other games to get the main gist of it all.Zanki Zero: Last Beginning - Originally $69.99; now $6.99
A post-apocalyptic dungeon crawler told through the perspectives of eight different characters that the player can control. It also has some survival game elements in which you have to monitor and balance your character’s needs and motives. If you’re not a big dungeon crawler person (like me), the English version includes an easier mode if you’re just interested in the story.Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse - Originally $33.49; now $26.79
I’m a big fan of Paranormasight not only because of its quirky characters and story-telling, but also its method of integrating the UI and player interface into the mystery solving. As I mentioned in my review, The Mermaid’s Curse took everything great about The Seven Mysteries of Honjo and elevated it. While The Seven Mysteries of Honjo was a lot more horror-based (albeit, it really does drop this after about a third of the game and isn’t very scary at all), The Mermaid’s Curse is full on a mystery. Speaking of which, Seven Mysteries of Honjo is also on sale!
Aside from the above titles, you can also check out these popular JRPG series sales if you’re looking to round out your library:
Persona Series - All games 50-80% off (Persona 5 Royal for $15.99 is a freaking steal; if you’ve never played it, I highly urge you to get it now while it’s 80% off)
- Metaphor: ReFantazio is not technically part of Persona, but it’s pretty much Fantasy Persona and is also on sale. This is 100% my bias speaking, but if you’re not sure if you should get Persona 5 Royal or Metaphor: ReFantazio, I recommend Persona 5 Royal way more, and it’s not just because it’s cheaper.Final Fantasy Series - All games and DLC 35-70% off
Top 10 Stories From the Past Month
Review: I’m so Disappointed in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy - I do genuinely wonder how many Dissidia fans wanted to see a mobile gacha version of the game. I suppose that’s the natural progression of the gaming economy and trend, sad as it is.
Xenosaga: Pied Piper Switch Release Date Set - It’s already out now for the Switch, and it’ll also come out on PC via Steam.
Chrono Trigger Chrono and Marle Form-ism Figures Set for September - No custom poses, but their default ones are already ripe for display.
Wild Arms 4 Will Be Playable on PS4 and PS5 - It’s part of the PlayStation Plus Premium Game Catalog lineup.
Utawarerumono: Lost Frag Offline Archive Version Confirmed - It’s a little ironic that Aquaplus announced this during the month of the Big NieR Reincarnation Offline Server Debate.
Wit Studio Will Remove Ascendance of a Bookworm Anime AI Scenes - There is heavy backlash and a boycott against NetEase/Identity V right now due to the usage of generative AI in the game. Though NetEase hasn’t put out a statement, new content lacks generative AI assets, and previous content has been fixed to exclude it. Hopefully, more companies will see the negativity around this technology and stop using it in favor of good old human-made art.
Fantasy Life i Android and iOS Mobile Ports Confirmed - It’ll come out in Summer 2026.
More Steel Ball Run JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Anime Episodes Air in Fall - This release schedule is bizarre, but on the bright side, weekly JoJo episodes again.
Review: Pragmata Feels Inspired by Sci-fi Blockbuster Movies - The cutest AI daughter.
New Concept Next Yo-kai Watch Holy Horror Mansion Teaser Appears - It’s been pretty torturous being a Level-5 fan these days.
