Nintendo Switch 2! Yay! What Games Are—Wait, How Much Did You Say They'll Cost?

Welcome to “Siliconera Speaks Up,” our newsletter for the site! This’ll be a summary of the past week’s anime or gaming news, a little reminder of things to come, and our insight on what games you should pick up next. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Speak Up Sesh

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Siliconera Speaks Up! To start off this week’s news, I’d like to remind everyone that we have an ongoing survey for you to leave your opinions on the site. We’re curious to know what you’d like us to cover more of, or what suggestions you have to make this site (and this newsletter too) bigger and better than before. We’d really appreciate it if you could spare about five to ten minutes of your day and fill it out. Who knows? Maybe your suggestion will be reflected in the future!

The Switch 2 Direct finally happened, giving us all a good look at what Nintendo was cooking all this time. And…well…it’s kind of hard to keep riding that hype train when you remember that physical games (that are really digital games in disguise) are going to cost you, like, $90. That’s USD, too! If you’re Canadian like me, you’re looking at a whopping $127. Wow, what great economic times we live in! The worst part about Nintendo is that its first-party games pretty much never go on sale, so even if you decide to wait a few years before buying something, that game is still going to cost you $90.

Apparently, some gamers are calling to boycott Nintendo, in hopes that the company will lower prices to get revenue back. There is precedent in that Nintendo lowered the price of the 3DS to recuperate after the handheld console’s initial floundering performance. And if you were around during the apex of the 3DS era, you know it worked.

Speaking of precedent, the reason why the crazy price tag on Nintendo games is a huge downer is that it's setting a nasty example. If other companies see that Nintendo is still able to turn a profit and sell games when the games are that ridiculously pricey, who’s to say they won’t raise the prices as well to keep up? It’s bad for gamers all around, even if you’re okay with paying $90 for a Switch 2 game. It’s a little hard to tell whether Nintendo planned for the games to be this expensive, or if it’s a reaction to the economic state of the world, but I don’t think most people have the luxury anymore of dropping this much money on video games anymore.

Who knows, though? The Switch 2 is coming out in early June 2025, and April only just started. Things could always change, and we could all be doomposting for no reason. I only hope that if things change, it’ll be for the better.
