Persona 4, Assassin's Creed...Welcome Back, Late 2000s
Welcome to “Siliconera Speaks Up,” our newsletter for the site! This’ll be a summary of the past week’s anime or gaming news, a little reminder of things to come, and our insight on what games you should pick up next. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Speak Up Sesh
Hello everyone, and welcome back to Siliconera Speaks Up! To start off this week’s news, I’d like to remind everyone that we have an ongoing survey for you to leave your opinions on the site. We’re curious to know what you’d like us to cover more of, or what suggestions you have to make this site (and this newsletter too) bigger and better than before. We’d really appreciate it if you could spare about five to ten minutes of your day and fill it out. Who knows? Maybe your suggestion will be reflected in the future!
With that out of the way, let’s talk about some recent developments in the gaming world! I was thinking of discussing Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its success (what with them achieving over a million players the first day it came out and all). But right before I sat down to type up this newsletter, I saw so much discourse on my timeline. I do think it’s hilarious that no one batted an eye at previous Assassin’s Creed games’ factual inaccuracies and, shall we say, flexible approach to historical fiction. Yet as soon as the main character is a black man in Japan—a black man who, if you do even the quickest of Google searches, appeared in Japanese media and literature before, and whom historians generally agree to exist—it’s suddenly dreadful that Ubisoft is taking so many liberties with its newest entry.
Discourse is such a drag, though! Who in the world wants to read that? Instead, let’s talk about the Persona 4 remake that’s got the Internet abuzz. Persona 4, ha! No one can ever start up discourse about that cherry game. Jokes aside, that Atlus might remake the game is not really a surprise, though. Persona 3 Reload was a huge success, after all. And just like how the original Persona 4 basically reused the same assets from Persona 3, they have all the assets they could want to repurpose right there! It’s like history repeating itself. That’s not a bad thing, of course. Persona 4 was an amazing game, even if it looked like a recolored Persona 3 half the time. Atlus might even take the opportunity to test out some new systems or mechanics it’ll use in Persona 6.
Okay, I admit it’s a little funny that we’re hearing more about a Persona 4 remake (potentially) before we hear anything about Persona 6. We even got a Persona 3 Reload while we were waiting for that! But real ones remember when people called Akira “Chair-kun.” Sometimes Atlus just needs that extra time to finesse whatever it’s working on, and if they want to warm up the market first with some nostalgia, more power to them.
