This week at Siliconera, our readers have been very interested in eye care, considering two of the top ten stories for the week were all about collaboration glasses! Some of the Zoff glasses really slayed. Some of them were…interesting. I say this as a Gojo stan whose taste in glasses have gotten some weird looks from family and friends: the color choices on those Gojo frames are sure a Look with a capital L. But considering the fanaticism that Gojo can inspire in his fanboys and fangirls, I’m sure that some people really enjoy that aesthetic.

Can you believe we’re already halfway through November? It kind of feels like the month is passing by so fast. We’re in the rush of Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Year though, so that’s hardly a surprise. Depending on what your schedule is and what job you have, this is the season when time can really start to blur together. On the bright side, it’s also the season for some major sales! Steam, for example, currently has a sale on cooking and food-related games. Meanwhile, Epic Games is literally giving away the Castlevania anniversary collection. Considering both Epic Games and Steam have tons of sales and giveaways on the regular, that might not be a surprise. But we’re fast approaching Black Friday. This is just the calm before the storm.

An interesting story that was popular this week was the Teen Titans anniversary special in Japan. Teen Titans Go in particular is really popular, especially since you can put it on for younger kids. I remember the fuss from fans of the original show when Cartoon Network and WB first unveiled the reboot. “What is this?!” we cried. “They’re butchering our characters!” Perhaps it’s karma or simply the cycle of characterization changes that occur in long-running franchises though. I recall reading that comics fans were really not happy with the original Teen Titans show.

When I was in high school, my art teachers looked down on styles that emulated anime and manga. This isn’t an isolated experience; I’ve read and heard of similar stories from plenty of people in other districts and countries. Some netizens view the enjoyment of Japanese anime and media as “cringe” as well. I wonder what they would say if they knew of the Japanese pop culture boom that was prevalent in the west during the early 2000s? I mentioned Martin Mystery in my coverage of the Teen Titans anniversary (a reference I realized was painfully Canadian after the fact), but shows like Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi and Totally Spies existed as well.

It’s a little ironic that part of the reason for the rise of Japanese pop culture in the west was the Dark Age of Comic Books, since the Teen Titans cartoon (which incorporates Japanese animation tropes and visual gags) was such a success here. Anime was always kind of a fringe interest; it wasn’t as if everyone and their mothers loved it back then either. But considering how interest waxes and wanes, trends come and go, who cares if something is “cringe” in the moment or not? Go enjoy your anime. Go put on your arm warmers.

To be cringe is to be free.
