The Little Insect That Could
Welcome to “Siliconera Speaks Up,” our newsletter for the site! This’ll be a summary of the past week’s anime or gaming news, a little reminder of things to come, and our insight on what games you should pick up next. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Speak Up Sesh
It’s the end of August, and stores are already rolling out their Halloween furniture and decorations for the spooky season. Don’t Starve Together is starting to make its way through my Discord friends list again, if the “Now Playing” status is any indication, and my favourite tea store is already advertising its pumpkin chai and other autumn-y blends on its front page. It just seems right to stay on theme and discuss some cozy content today.
Before we begin in earnest, though, I’d like to remind our dear subscribers that, if you’re in the US or India, you can set Siliconera as your preferred news source on Google. This will make Siliconera’s links appear in the “top stories” section so you can find us quicker. You can find the preferences for doing so via this link. We also have a tutorial for the process here.
There’s nothing about Hollow Knight that is cozy, really. It’s a pretty unforgiving game, the game first came out in February, and the story doesn’t exactly scream “comfort game.” I only associate it with autumn because I happened to play it during an annual re-watch of Over the Garden Wall. After years of waiting and rumours, we finally have a release date for Silksong, the long-anticipated sequel. The aura for Silksong is crazy. I’ve seen developers delay their game because they knew it would overshadow all its competitors. That’s how wild the hype for it is.
It definitely makes sense, though. Think of how many objectively good movies that bombed at the box office because a bigger movie came out at the same time. I wonder how many developers were holding their heads in their hands at the realization that their game would be coming out around Silksong but couldn’t change the release date?
Silksong and Hollow Knight as a whole really seems like a game development heaven that other studios can only dream to attain. That Team Cherry could afford such a long delay to really perfect the game while still working at it speaks to the enduring success of Hollow Knight. While some studios spend a lot of time promoting their games in the weeks or months or even years leading up to the big release date, Silksong felt like it barely got much of anything. Considering how Silksong was in people’s mouths every year and major gaming event, though, a long promotion and marketing cycle probably wasn’t necessary. That, too, is fantastic for Team Cherry.
With this much anticipation from so many fans, hopefully Team Cherry isn’t feeling too much pressure to live up to expectations, especially after such a long wait between games. In any case, we’ll get to return to Hallownest and see what’s new next week (!).
