The True Gamer Fuel

Welcome to “Siliconera Speaks Up,” our newsletter for the site! This’ll be a summary of the past month’s anime or gaming news, a little reminder of things to come, and our insight on what games you should pick up next. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Speak Up Sesh

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another Siliconera Speaks Up! Now, as you may have noticed, this is no longer a weekly thing, but rather a monthly one. It’s still the same newsletter in terms of content, albeit on a less regular basis.

With that shop talk out of the way, let’s talk games! To be precise, let’s talk about The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-. What a crazy, ambitious project! Too Kyo really lives up to their name, because no sane video game developer would have okayed a game with a hundred different endings, and that’s not even including the 30-hour prologue. That’s not the reason I’d like to bring it up, though. The real reason is…the curry.

Aniplex has uploaded the official recipe for the curry that appears multiple times throughout the game. In the story, this is a curry that calls for precise measurements, a specific spice blend, and lots of micromanaging. The Aniplex recipe isn’t that complicated, despite how daunting the ingredients and instructions may look. Aside from the wait time, it only took about thirty minutes, and the result was a surprisingly light curry with a complex flavour that’s a mix of sweet, bitter, and spicy.

I learned a lot from this recipe, as both a cook and a fan of the game. The last time I put coffee in curry, I ended up with a little of gritty bits and no distinct flavour. But in this one, it turned out fine, so it turns out I was using the wrong type of coffee back then. Now, I have no clue how much collaboration was going on between Aniplex and Too Kyo when it came to the actual recipe, but the curry doesn’t taste like curry at all. It lacks the warm and comfort I associate with a normal Japanese curry, and judging by Kurara’s…congenial personality in the game, I started wondering if this Oosuzuki curry explains some things about that. I wondered if Kurara grew up in a loveless home.

It’s kind of a crazy assumption to make just from a curry recipe, I know. But it’s true! And this sort of extra content just adds so much more fun to a game’s characters and story, even when you’re not playing it. Like how the bulk of the food in the Stardew Valley cookbook was vegetarian, or how the meticulous old man Zhongli in Genshin Impact has a particular version of Teyvat-style yanduxian (Shanghai pork soup with bamboo and tofu) as his signature dish.

Many cultures love to talk about how much they love food and how important food is them, and looking at the history of a cuisine can tell a lot about the demographic or country it’s from. So it stands to reason that the same goes for fictional people and locales. Hopefully, we’ll see more recipes that are specific to a game or character that focus on telling a story with it rather than just drawing inspiration from it. Granted, since I’m pretty sure most companies don’t have recipe developers on hand, I suppose it would be a little unrealistic to expect that for every company.
